World’s longest panoramic pic?

I came across the the second multimedia feature I want to flag via Twitter. It’s astonishing. A panoramic image of a Nairobi street that takes the YouTube video six minutes to travel down. It comes from the book Trading Places, The Merchants of Nairobi by Steve Bloom.

I wonder, do you think this would be as interesting without the sound?

I’m in two minds about this project, so bare with me.

Firstly it does seem he’s not exactly walking but more being driven. The distance from the camera to the kerb is mostly the same throughout the series of images. I get the feeling I’m sitting in a car, at the back, and looking at the people and places as I drive down this street. Nigeria drives on the right and it’s all too familiar with the safari images you often see.

The music does add to the project, that’s given but maybe I’m not exactly seeing images that exactly pop out at me.

Maybe I’ve just lost the plot, so apologies.

  2. I agree … I think its interesting for about 90 seconds after which I’m bored.

This would work much better in a gallery where you could walk up and down the photo at your own pace.

It bored me after about 15 seconds. I’m not sure why but it just doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t see the point – am I missing something?

it’s much more interesting if you watch the HD version in full screen – you can see a lot more detail

It is what it is- and not bad at that. But would definitely benefit from gallery viewing where it could be displayed in its entire grandeur as already suggested.

I stopped after a minute. Yet, it sparks debate and debate sparks awareness. @Daniel, yeh it does remind me of being in a car and we see that everyday. If I saw this without knowing about the political background or instability I’d think ‘hmm ok it doesnt look too bad there. A pub says alcohol trading to me and that is a good sign. So do I need to feel compelled to help change this’

Your all right about a room print..would feel more connected to the country I dont think the video does it justice because as you move through a video its a natural progression away from the problems. The image in an exhibition, like @duckrabbitblog said would give the ability to view carefully at specific areas..with accompanied text and not audio.

Good. Still raises awareness with this debate though :)

  7. Hi Stephen,

we shouldn’t try and lay stuff on photos that just isn’t there. The photo’s not meant to make you feel compelled to do anything … this is a street in Kenya … its life.
