Dongria Kondh threatened

Vedanta Resources, a British mining company, plans to dig an open-pit bauxite mine on Niyamgiri mountain in India.

The mine will destroy the forests on which the Dongria Kondh depend and wreck the lives of thousands of other tribal people living in the area.

India’s Supreme Court has given the go ahead for the mine, but the Kondh peoples are determined to prevent the destruction of their most sacred site.

The Niyamgiri Hills are home to the more than 8,000 Dongria Kondh as well as dense primary forest and rich wildlife.

The Dongria Kondh have just appealed to James Cameron, director of Avatar, to help them, as they believe their plight is similar to that of the Na’vi people depicted in the film.
